Janet Tomlin (DipHyp, BSc, PhD)

I trained in Clinical Hypnotherapy in order to help people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (I.B.S.). My interest developed during more than 10 years as a research scientist in gastroenterology and nutrition (when I gained my PhD). I saw Dr Peter Whorwell of Manchester at successive conferences of the British Society of Gastroenterology demonstrate his results with hypnotherapy in I.B.S. He showed dramatically better success rates than all of the pharmaceutical agents being developed at that time. This seemed to me to be a most promising route to explore and so I decided to train in hypnotherapy.

I gained insight into the patients' perspective whilst performing physiological assessments and biofeedback therapy for NHS patients with bowel problems. Combining this with my extensive knowledge and interest in gastrointestinal physiology, and training and experience in hypnotherapy, I have a unique set of skills to help people with I.B.S.. I am professional, down to earth, caring and compassionate. Please read the testimonials for an objective view of my way of working.

I have a Diploma in Therapeutic Hypnosis from The Northern College of Clinical Hypnosis. The course on which I studied is independently assessed by The Medical Examination Board and accredited by The Hypnotherapy Society, and so you can be sure that I have been thoroughly and properly trained to work safely and effectively.

As well as my university and NHS experience I have taken part in the following continuing professional development courses as a hypnotherapist-

Certificate in Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Its Successful Treatment with Hypnotherapy from The Central England College,

Certificate in Working with Irritable Bowel Syndrome from The Academy of Clinical & Medical Hypnosis,

Certificate in Hypnotherapy for IBS (gut specific and gut-directed protocols) from the National Hypnotherapy Society

Certificate in The use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in IBS - Irritable Bowel Syndrome: The Hidden Disorder, 2017

I have worked on the advisory board of the IBS Network, the national charity which supports people with IBS from 2012 and actively support their work.

My techniques involve gut-directed hypnotherapy and are based on those of the successful Hypnotherapy Unit of South Manchester University Hospital Functional Bowel Service. Therapy involves a course of 6 one-hour sessions over 2-3 months. These may be followed by 'top-up' sessions at regular intervals to ensure continued relief if required.

I am a Member of The National Hypnotherapy Society and follow their Code of Practice. This is one of a small number of professional bodies which is accredited by the Professional Standards Agency (correct as of Oct 2019). This means that all of its members are bound to meet the high standards of personal behaviour, technical competence and where relevant, business practice.

I have full public liability insurance and full police DBS check.

I have been working using online videocalls recently and find it just as effective as face to face therapy.

I offer free 15 minute consultations to discuss hypnotherapy and I.B.S. and to answer any questions you may have, so that you can decide whether you think this technique is appropriate for you. You can send me a message asking me to contact you at the bottom of the next page.
